While finishing up some shooting for an upcoming series that will be on display in a local gallery my Canon died. I thought it was a fluke at first, but no...it's dead! After speaking with Canon warranty I was told 3-4 weeks and the repair should be free of cost. I'd almost rather pay and have it back sooner. 3-4 weeks with no camera, this is gonna hurt! Back to the old point-and-shoot.

the snow is gone and it's time to get back on the trails at hurd park. t and i put in a mellow hour long hike on monday afternoon and i put in a 6.5 miler yesterday. wow did those 60 degree temps and sunshine feel good! got some time in behind the lens as well, scope it out...

haven skatepark put on a t-shirt design contest back in the fall and i was fortunate to have my design chosen to be their new shirt. the design i created was actually screened on the back of black hoodies instead of t-shirts, pretty cool! the circular haven fullpipe icon beneath the "a" is located where the park actually is in the state...north haven. the hoodies are available for sale at the park, get one and support haven!

we're only halfway through winter and we've already seen 4+ feet of snow. tuesdays ice storm was pretty wild resulting in lots on glazing. cars, road signs, plants...everything....encased in ice yielding some wild shots.

so the gallery at 70 main is proving to be a great success. t has sold 6 pieces of artwork, various illustrated cards, and sold out of her rockafella' christmas card. today we hung more of t's work as she's acquiring even more space in the gallery to display her art. i'm psyched to see so much of her work finally hung and off the shelves of her studio cause it needs to be seen!

as for my art, well my display is a pretty simple mix and match of bmx photography from the ridetyrant site and some nature photos i captured over the past year. my pieces that are actually on display are not for sale but prints can certainly be purchased by contacting me via one of the gallery associates. enjoy!

i was pretty fired up to shoot some photos of the lunar eclipse early this morning and sure enough cloud cover put an end to that around 2 am. i didn't even bother going outside to set up my tripod, i just pouted and went back to bed. i did however manage to snap a few shots of a great sunset yesterday afternoon and a lunar ring at 11 pm last night.

i woke up and scooted out the door at 6:45 on sunday morning while at t's folks in rhode island. it was a balmy 16 degrees out and i lost all feeling in my shutter finger in a matter of 20 minutes. despite being chilled to the bone i managed to snap some shots around the barrington river area prior to it leading into hundred acre cove.

i love radio shack's new ad campaign promoting their cycling team and lance armstrong during the tour de france. the print and banner ads are so basic and clean and all over the net. i can't imagine this ad (which they probably paid thousands to run on velonews.com during the tour de france) took a designer more than 10 minutes to create. simple and effective!

i couldn't tell you the last time i worked with water colors...maybe high school? t and i worked in the studio on saturday evening painting some mini landscapes and some custom mom's day cards. i forgot how forgiving water colors are and how wild color blending can be. i didn't take any photos of the stuff we got done, but here is some of t's past watercolor work...amazing stuff!!!

wow, friday night was a total blast from the past! spring heeled jack put on their reunion show at toad's place and it was like i was 17 again standing front row at the tune inn. sure, they haven't played in 8+ years and there were some mess ups here and there, but it was still awesome! to top off the evening chris rhodes, shj trombonist and well know mighty mighty bosstones member, handed tina his set list. woo hoo!

t and i hiked the salmon river trail yesterday. it was really brisk out, but we had to get out and check out all the greenery and get some fresh air. the streams and river were flowing at a good clip thanks to the day and a half of rain and the forest floor was soggy. it kind felt like we were hiking in the pacific northwest.

wow, friday was awesome! not only did we have sox tickets, we managed to score spots on a pre-game tour of fenway park which included us going on the field and watching batting practice from atop the green monsta! to say were thrilled would be an understatement! to top off the night, t got a ball thrown up to her from the sox bullpen which had her smiling ear to ear.

we spent the past 4 days up in maine at the gates compound and it was quite an adventure. we got walloped with 60 mph winds and torrential down pours which resulted in the power going out. the power remained out for 48 hours, but we made the best of it and still got out and about to see the sites. maine is always a good time, especially when it's snow-free, sunny, and 47 out for 3 days straight!

so yesterday was my 30th birthday and i had 2 parties thrown for me!..pretty wild! the afternoon party was a surprise party with family and it was amazing. so much food...catered! tons or snacks, desserts, beverages...and fun! i couldn't of asked for a better afternoon. saturday night we had dozens of friends over for more food and drink and fun. the last people left around 3am sunday...14 hours after the first party began. 30 is no joke, i don't know how i lasted that long!...but it sure was fun! a huge thanks to everyone who had a hand in the party and showed up to celebrate...i greatly appreciate it!

the billboard below which is aside 95 in bridgeport has been the center of media attention here in ct. apparently motorists are under the impression the maniquin atop the billboard is real and they're calling 911 reporting a potential "jumper". personally, i think a man in pajamas with his teddy bear and a message promoting overnight test drives go hand in hand and there is no reason for alarm! i also think all those people calling 911 deserve $100 tickets for operating a cell phone while driving. i have to give props to the designer behind the billboard! such a simple design and message making a significant impact on the marketplace and bringing huge exposure to the dealership...well done!

the past 2 days have been in the high 40s/low 50s and sunny...sure hasn't felt like january! this weekend was a drastic change from the 14 degree hikes we've been taking. i took advantage of the melting snow and puddling to capture a few cools shots. saturday i spotted a hawk perched in a tree, but sadly the longest zoom lens i had was a 50-135. i'm hoping to get a clean shot of a hawk in the near future that t is going to use as research for a new painting.

i was recently asked why i've been posting tons of photos over the past few years but very little design work. the bulk of my design work is related to pharmaceuticals...my 9-5 job. there are strict guidelines preventing me from sharing artwork because despite me designing it...it is the property of the pharma companies. i'm planning to start posting more freelance design work and personal artwork in the coming weeks and a aveccadesign.com website redesign is in the works.

brrr! yesterday t and i hiked for 2 hours through hurd and higganum meadow and it was cold! we we're layered up really well and our core's were cozy, but that wind chill on the face was pretty brutal...especially along the connecticut river. despite the chill we had a great time enjoying nature and the tranquility it provides. i've said it time and time again...nothing beats that crisp winter air and the silence in the woods!

i went flying with barry b. today in the cessna he and bill from pedal power own. damn it was cold on the ground, but it was pretty cozy in the plane. part of that warmth may have come from me sweating a bit! barry flew at 2000 feet so i could take photos and it was pretty bumpy at times, not appealing to my weak stomach. no chunks were flown, so it was a great flight ;) we flew over 122, middletown, my folks house, and made our way out to uconn. i'm really fortunate to know folks that fly...thanks barry!

wow, this weekend was quite an adventure. we headed up to mass. friday and hung out with t's brother and his family. saturday we had plans to attend a christmas party in rockport, mass and stay overnight at an inn on the coast...but ended up retreating home to ct to avoid the wrath of winter storm albert. yesterday i spent a good portion of the morning clearing snow and the rest of the day was spent relaxing. gotta love 11 inches of snow!

t and i are adopting two kitties from a shelter that my friend works at. sonja is a 2 year old tabby and walli is a 3 year old tiger cat. we're psyched to have both of these cats coming into our home. it's been a lonely 4 months since our kitty korny passed away! we'll be traveling for the holiday, so the shelter is going to look after our kitties for one more week. this time next week we'll have 2 new furry friends in our lives.

i put up our little christmas tree yesterday and scattered some holiday decorations about the house. our tree is decorated very simply with small silver gift boxes, pine cones, and faux holly bunches. i picked up the below ornament this morning which was custom painted for us by local artist michele mazza. she has been hand painting glass ornaments for the holidays and was nice enough to take a special request from me. thanks michele! this ornament is dead center acting as the heart of our tree. happy holidays everyone!

t and i were up and at it early again today, this time hiking at hurd state park. we made our way down to the river and walked the full length of the slab stone jetty...a solid 20 minute tip toe adventure paying extra close attention not to fall in the frigid water! there were lots of signs of beavers in action and one chow spot was bloody...fresh blood that couldn't of been more than a few hours old...which was a pretty wild sight! we had a stalker the whole way back up the trail from the river, a dog that insisted on following us and leaving his dog friend and master in the dust. too funny, but he eventually ran back to his group. fun, fun sunday!

t and i were up bright and early yesterday to hit the trails at machimoodus state park. it was 24 degrees out with a 10 degree wind chill making the start of the walk west into the wind pretty brutal! once we got the blood pumping we warmed up pretty fast and the rest of our hour and a half adventure was fun. we looked all over the park as we hiked trying to locate the spot where the christmas tree now standing in gilette castle was cut down, but we had no luck. hmmm? we spotted a monsterous eagle soaring over head which always an awesome site. after our hike we grabbed some delicious food down in essex and sat in the toasty warm car along the connecticut river enjoying our lunch and taking in the sites. such a low key, relaxing day together.

t and i toured gilette castle yesterday morning. the castle is decked out for the holidays including a huge 18' fully decorated tree which was cut locally at machimoodus state park...a place we hike and cross country ski. the craftsmanship inside that castle is amazing! so much hand carved wood and each of the doors is a work of art in itself. i suggest spending the $10 and checking out gilette if you have time. they castle is open on saturdays and sundays from 10-4 until the end of the holidays.

due to my hand injury and surgery i won't be back on a bike till at least march. i've been going stir crazy cause it's been almost 2 months since i've done anything active. monday i got the ok to start running which i'm thrilled about. i need to get back into shape and lose some of this "i've done nothing in 2 months" gut i've developed! yesterday an alumni cross country race was held at ehhs and i took part in the event. i placed 6th with a time in the 24 minute range. hell, that's really slow for me but not bad for being totally out of shape with a bulky soft cast on my right arm. it was great to see some old faces, especially my high school coach. it was also a blast from the past to have my dad on the course cheering me on. he used to be a maniac back in the day running all over the course and giving me an encouraging earful at every turn. running on the grueling cross country course that has changed pretty drastically since my days back in the 90's was a challenge, but i will admit i like the old hill better. goodtimes!

: thanksgiving 2009

t and i spent 4 days in rhode island at her folks place for the thanksgiving holiday. we consumed mass amounts of food & drink in the 4 days! wednesday we adventured into providence to check out some stuff at risd, we had amazing falafel at east side pocket, stopped in to see vic at circuit bmx, and i snapped some photos here and there. thanksgiving day was a fun! my tofurky came out great for the 3rd year in a row and it was nice to see some of t's family we haven't see in months. there was a little stinker running around the yard on t-day, check the photos. we boycotted black friday as we always do and decided to veg out and relax. late in the day we took a ride down to colt state park to check out the sites...but it was rainy and pretty chilly out so that put a damper on our trip. anyway, we're back in the 860 and are very thankful for the great 4 day mini-vacation we had.

the storms of 2009 have really hit close to home...because each storm name thus far has been the same as someone in t's family. we had hurricane bill (t's brother is bill), tropical storm ana (t's niece is anna), tropical storm grace (t's niece/bill's daughter is grace) and now tropical storm ida (t's sister-in-laws sister is ida). Yeah, it's kinda dorky...but none the less, very coincidental!

so i've mentioned before, i always have a camera on me...be it my camera phone, point-and-shoot, or my digital slr. well this morning upon getting into the car i snapped a shot of a japanese maple leaf and some water droplets on my windshield. i remember shooting a similar shot a while back, but what the heck...i took it anyway. when i upload today's photo to my computer i went back in my library and searched for the similar shot from some time ago. to my surprise i took the same shot, of the same subject, with the same camera, at almost the same time this exact day last year! i know it's only a coincidence, but damn, that is freaky!!!

: wednesday walk

t and i are back in our fall/winter routine of going for evening walks. this year i'll be getting out almost daily because i'm restricted to basically no physical activity till early december due to my hand surgery. as usual, i have my point-and-shoot camera with me at all times and enjoy taking some random snapshots here and there. we walked our east hampton loop last night and no walk here is complete without a brief stop off for a few photos in the lakeside cemetery.

wow, november already! i spent halloween day tending the leaf infestation at 122 and sunday t and i laid low and hit up hurd park and a local cemetery that was established in the 1800's! we've really been trying to get our fix of local history lately...hence all the very old cemetery visits. next on our list is old newgate prison...should be cool! we took a trip up to north hampton last night to deliver hebrank to the maynard house. prior to his drop off we grabbed some oh so yummy pizza at paradiso, definitely a place to check out if you're in noho. anyway, blah blah blah. fall is flying by, snow will be here before you know it, darkness falls at like 4 o'clock now, and christmas carols will be on the radio next week! such is the holiday season in new england!

t and i made the best of the wishy washy weather on saturday and made our way around the state like 2 tourists stopping at various spots all up and down the route 9 corridor. on our way up rt. 156 in lyme we discovered the nehantic state forest. we followed the leaf littered dirt road for what seemed like an eternity before coming to an intersection, each way leading to a body of water. we took each road, one leading to a lake and one to a pond, then made our way back out of the forest. the forest is really cool and an ideal place to cross country ski. we'll be back when my hand is healed and there is snow on the ground.

in honor of halloween and all things creepy t and i walked around east hampton last night and i took a few b & w shots at 2 different cemeteries. one of the cemeteries has some seriously old gravestones and i'm planning on going back in the coming days with my tripod to get some more shots.

: orionid a bust!

so this morning was supposed to be peak viewing for the annual orionid meteor shower. i dragged myself out of bed at 5am and headed over to rose hill, one of the highest & darkest points in town. i watched the sky for 30 minutes and saw nothing. i took a few times exposures and they were garbage. basically i lost 2 hours of sleep for nothing! i snapped one funky 3 minute exposure on my front steps before retreating to be for an hour before work. That red light in the bottom of the photo is the garbage truck invading my frame!
