: blunt park cross
so the first race of the 2008 cyclocross season was today and i was on the sidelines with doctors orders not to ride for 3-5 weeks, what a drag! i headed up to the blunt park race in springfield with lolli to cheer him on, snap some photos, and at least immerse myself in the madness that is cyclocross. we left middletown at 6 am and were at the race sight way too early...2 hours pre-race early. no worries, we scoped out the area and rocked out to some metal to kill time. matt got in a solid 3-4 laps of pre-ride and i pre-walked the course. there was about 3/4 of a mile of gnarly woods, pretty fresh cut double track with roots, numerous log crossings, and soft earth...not fast terrain by any means! the gun went off at 9 and lolli got the hole shot off the line, a must since he rides a single speed steed. matt held his own most of the race, dashing over obstacle after obstacle and hammering the switchbacks. after 40 minutes of pain and suffering matt and another guy were neck and neck in the last 200 meters. lolli out jumped the dude on the last log and owned him at the finish taking 16th in the 30 or so rider field. i must admit, i wouldn't of given lolli any sh!t if that dude got him at the line, he should have. The clown was on a custom titanium serotta mountain bike with a fox fork running a triple and matt out kicked him on his singlespeed! go to the norba races buddy, this is cyclocross!!! all in all it was a good showing for the 1st race of the season. next on the list, crossvegas next month in las vegas. woo hoo! lots of photos of matt, click here.
